FREMONT, CA: Call fraud occurs when hackers access the VoIP system and place unauthorized calls that result in hoarding bills for calls that one has not made. Call fraud can be made to any destination but characteristically includes toll fraud: a situation in which the VoIP device is compromised and used to make many illegal foreign calls.
According to one recent study, a projected 28.3 billion dollars was lost worldwide in 2019 due to telecommunications fraud. In particular, one study found that Private Branch Exchange (PBX) hacking and IP PBX hacking are the third and fourth top telecoms frauds correspondingly. While IP PBX fraud, on the other hand, is the second top emerging telecommunications fraud. Specifically, VoIP fraud is enormous right now, but it is a developing threat to watch out for.
Here are some key ways to protect the VoIP system from call fraud.
Enhance the Outbound Rules: One must not just leave the default outbound rules in place. Firms should ensure that they mention prefixes, number lengths, and extension groups dialed on the system.
Block Premium-Rate Numbers and International Calls: If businesses find that one often makes international calls, they may restrict countries to which such calls can be made, limiting users who may make those calls to the device and protect the use of international calls with a hidden code that only key people in the company know about.
Optimize the VoIP To Move Through A Firewall: A firewall can periodically analyze and filter voice and data packets through the network. It is a long way to avoid unusual events in their tracks. If one does not already have a SIP firewall, ensure to activate it.
Check the Call Records Regularly: Firms should pay particular attention to calls made during off-work hours, odd call durations, and international numbers. Notify the service provider immediately on finding suspicious behavior that the company is not aware of.
Patch the VoIP Devices and Applications Frequently: A hacker can take over the VoIP system and change the settings if the system is obsolete and buggy. Regularly repairing the VoIP software and firmware will improve the VoIP system and help defend against call fraud.
